In 1946, called to collaborate with the magazine ''"Asso di Picche"'' by Mario Faustinelli, he became part of the so-called Group of Venice with Hugo Pratt, Dino Battaglia and Damiano Damiani.
== Biography ==

Carcupino was born in Rome, the son of Matilda and Mario. After attending the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, he dedicated himself to painting.
During the Second World War he worked to the animated feature ''"The Rose of Baghdad"'' (La rosa di Bagdad) along with Angelo Bioletto, Maraja and other animators under the direction of Anton Gino Domeneghini. In the early 1940s he also wrote and drew his first comic titled ''"Scacco matto a Coe"'' (Checkmate to Coe) within the series ''The Solitary'' (Il Solitario) for the weekly magazine "Dinamite" and later on the book with the same name.
In 1946, Mario Faustinelli called him to be part of the venetian Magazine "Asso di Picche", where he published the serialized horror ''"Draky"'', ''"La morte viene con la nebbia"'' (Death comes with fog) and, later, ''"Billy King e il vampire Lyon"'' (Billy King and the vampire Lyon), ''"Il figlio del vampire"'' (The son of the vampire), that in the sixties were restored by the artist himself for one of the most important European magazines in the comics market, Sgt. Kirk, of the Genoese publisher Fiorenzo Ivaldi (patron of Hugo Pratt).
In 1948 Carcupino drew ''"Il figlio della note"'' (The son of the night) on a story by Andrea Lavezzolo.
In 1954, ''"La settimana umoristica"'' (The week humorous), presents, ''"The girl of Carcupino"'' and in the centerfold ''"Rome by night"''.
Carcupino travelled and lived abroad a lot, especially in New York and East Africa. In 1983 the President of the Italian Repubblic appointed him Knight for Artistic Merit. In 1989 he was commissioned to paint a portrait of Pope John Paul II, and on that occasion the Pope invited Carcupino to a private meeting.
Carcupino had many solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad, focused especiallyon portraits of naked women, young girls and mothers with children, ''"My women are never idealized, but observed in private moments of their daily lives. In this way I believe to be able to gathering water better what I think of human nature. I prefer the still life, perhaps because I see in books, in the plasticity of the forms, a sensuous appeal"''.
Among the biographers of Carcupino are his daughter Stefania, critics Ignazio Mormino, Ennio Concarotti and Giuseppe Patellaro, Graziano Origa, Claudio dell'Orso, and the collector Ilenio Trevisan.
In 1999 the ''"Festival Expocartoon"'' rewarded him with Caran d'Ache, a life award for illustration.
In 1997, the magazine The Comics Journal in Italy by Graziano Origa devoted to him two special issues.
He died in Milan on 21 March 2003 after a long illness.
